Welcome to the world of Japanese embroidery, Sashiko, by Rei Saito, a pioneer in this artistry technique who continued to embroider every day until the age of 90. She celebrates her 98th year this year.

Artist Profile:
Rei Saito, born in Hirosaki in 1928.
Sashiko artist. From a young age, she studied French embroidery and Japanese painting under Gyoshu Okitsu, a disciple of Gyokudo Kawai. She developed her own unique style based on the ‘sashiko’ technique passed down from her grandmother, creating numerous works that incorporate patterns with a fresh sensibility.

Major exhibitions include ‘The World of Rei Saito’s Sashiko’ (Wako, Ginza), the ‘NHK Handicraft Festival’ (Matsuya, Ginza) and the ‘Exhibition of 100 Quilt Artists from Around the World’ (Mitsukoshi, Nihonbashi).
